Restful spaces in your home are vitally important for your wellbeing. We love creating sanctuaries in homes. Here are few tips for creating your own.
- Consider color first. When you’re planning a retreat in your home (whether it’s a complete room or a small nook), reflect on the colors that bring you calm. These are often subdued colors like soft blues and warm neutrals. We find Sherwin William’s “Making Spaces Tranquil” color guide especially helpful. Paint is one of the most cost-effective ways to have a big impact on home and office décor. Set a restorative mood with paint color.
- Simplify your surroundings. De-clutter your living area so that distractions are free and clear. Use baskets and nearby shelving to store your favorite books nearby.
- Cozy up. Add your personal touch and a bit of warmth to your space with comfortable pillows, warm throws and a place to prop up your feet. We love thick cushions and heavy blankets on otherwise hard benches. Even if the space is small, you can create an area that restores your mind, body and spirit.
- Fill the air with soothing scents such as lavender and peppermint. Whether you opt for a fragrant candle or a diffuser with essential oils, calming scents are another way to create a restful space.
- Add soft lighting to the area with a table-top lamp. We especially like lamps with varying light level options. Turn on brighter light when reading. Switch to lower lighting when listening to music or meditating. Of course, lamp shades come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors, giving you more ways to personalize your rest spot.
