5 Ways to Make Your Home Cozy for Fall

With the hot summer we had in Houston, I am thrilled for fall to be coming with cooler weather. This time of year is one of my favorites both here in Houston and other parts of the country and world. The beautiful natural fall colors bring me inspiration for designing equally beautiful interiors. I am excited to share with you my five ways to embrace the fall season and make your home cozy.

1. Bring natural elements of fall inside your home
I love to collect fall leaves and pinecones when I am outside on a walk viewing the brilliant fall colors. A visit to a local pumpkin patch is also a wonderful activity to collect some natural elements of fall. When I envision how to bring the natural elements of fall into a home it can be a natural, yet elegant tablescape with the fall with leaves, fall flowers and foliage, as well as gourds and pinecones.

Another way to bring the natural elements of fall into your home is by utilizing some of the warm tones of fall into your decorative items. You may consider swapping out your pillows for those with warmer tones of red, orange and yellow to add the warmth of fall to your home.

2. Create a fall focal point on your fireplace
I invite you to create an inviting space around your fireplace and encourage family and friends to get close and connect around the fire. I love the idea of adding some fall foliage to the fireplace mantel with a display of pinecones, gourds, and leaves. As well, you could add in a few books and magazines on end tables to encourage people to come and sit by the fire.

One of my favorite things to do in the fall is to use our outdoor fireplace. This allows us to be outdoors and enjoy a bit of the cool breeze, while staying cozy by the fire. One of the ways you can make your outside fireplace more cozy is adding in the blankets and extra pillows.

3. Create an area in your kitchen or bar area for warm drinks
A wonderful part about the fall is the delicious warm drinks. You can create a space within your kitchen or bar area specifically for making those delicious warm and cozy beverages. We love how creative you can get with these spaces. Everything from a simple few shelves to a more elaborate enclosed nook where you have everything you need at your finger-tips.

4. Using fall candles
Candles can add a warmth to a space naturally with the light, but also by adding accent colors with a red, yellow or orange fall colored candle. As well, candles with fall-scents are a way to bring the feel of fall inside your home. Some of my fall favorite scents are the classic pumpkin spice and apple cinnamon as well, I enjoy cedarwood and gingerbread scents.

You can be creative with where you have candles throughout the house. We usually see candles throughout the kitchen and dining rooms. You may consider adding a few to your bathroom area to bring some fall colors and scents to the bathroom. As well, adding a candle in a reading nook area of your home brings in that extra cozy feel.

5. Decorate your front porch
Mums are a gorgeous way to decorate your outside space. The colors of red, orange, yellow mums add a wonderful pop of fall color to your front porch. Another beautiful way to decorate is with dried hydrangeas or foxtails. A burlap rug can add an extra warmth to the space. Consider adding some pillows in fall colors to an outside chair or swing that brings together the feeling of fall.

I hope these design ideas have inspired you to bring some cozy elements into your home for the fall.

We are off to our new design challenge.
