Maintaining a well-organized home is the first step to creating a beautiful, comfortable space, and we’ve all heard countless tips on how to better organize your home and declutter. Even with these tips, most of us struggle to cut the clutter for good or carry out our organizing plans. Rather than focusing on what you should do, it’s time to think about what you should not be doing when you tackle your clutter.

There are a few things that are more likely to derail your efforts. Here’s what NOT to do the next time you want to organize your home!

Don’t Head Straight to the Store

So you want to organize your home. It’s a good guess that your first idea is most likely to head to The Container Store to purchase baskets, bins, and boxes, but this will only make you stray from your mission. First, you need to organize and purge the belongings you no longer need. By doing this first, you will have a better understanding of the storage solutions you need and don’t need.

Don’t Overwhelm Yourself

You don’t have to set aside an entire day to organize every room in the house. There aren’t many of us who have the patience and focus to spend eight hours organizing an entire home. This will only lead to frustration and less efficient progress. Spend two-hour blocks on one project or space at a time. You will feel more motivated and will be less likely to burn out.

Don’t Leave Tasks Incomplete

If a room is nearly done, then finish it. Don’t move on to the next room until you’re truly finished. This means not only have you organized the space, removed the items you’re donating or selling, but you’ve also taken those trash bags for charity out of the house. Try not to keep items that you’re getting rid of in your home for more than a day or two.

Don’t Expect to be Done for Good

Even the most organized space will need upkeep, so don’t think you’re done for good. Realize that you haven’t failed when you have to come back to decluttering a few months later. Instead, realize that you now have an efficient process for tackle the project.

Finally, don’t expect perfection! You can have a beautiful and luxurious home even if your closet isn’t color-coded and there is a bit of disarray in your kitchen cabinets.
